The Past Players and all at the Geelong Football Club are deeply saddened by the passing this week of former player Brian Lowe, aged 85.
Our sincere condolences go out to Brian’s family, friends and former team-mates.
Originally from the City-South Football Club in Tasmania, Brian played 36 senior games for Geelong predominantly as a ruckman between 1961 and 1963. A member of the 1961 ‘night premiership’ team, Brian also played in the drawn 1962 VFL preliminary final against Carlton in his second season. His last senior game for the Cats was the semi-final defeat of Hawthorn in 1963, but unfortunately was not selected for the premiership decider two weeks later, which Geelong went on to win. Brian was a member of the Reserves Premiership in that 1963 season, voted Best on Ground in that game.
After leaving Geelong, Brian returned to Tasmania where he played for Cooee as Captain-Coach (1964-66), East Launceston (1967-71, 1975-76, 1978), where he also served as Captain-Coach at various stages, with a stint at Westbury FC in between from 1972 to 74.
In 1979, after relocating to Queensland, Brian was lured out of retirement to Captain-Coach the Southport FC on the Gold Coast, coaching and playing in that team’s premiership win in that season, at 40 years of age!
Brian represented his home state of Tasmania in 8 representative matches, as well as in the 1966 National Football Carnival in Hobart. In all, Brian played in 9 senior football premierships across the many teams and years he played between 1955 to 1979.
Brian Lowe was inducted into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2005. A wonderful tribute to his contribution to football can be found here.
Rest in peace Brian Lowe
