The AFLW Cats are set to kick off their 2024 season on Saturday night, when they host Melbourne under the bright lights at GMHBA Stadium.
Geelong are looking to build on their successful 2023 campaign, which saw them win the first final in their AFLW history while making it all the way to a Preliminary Final.
One big factor in the Cats 2024 season will be midfielder Nina Morrison, who was a breakout star last year averaging 23 disposals and five clearances per game.
Morrison said the group is excited and ready to go in round one, following a strong preseason that has the team well prepared to handle the 2024 season.
“It always feels a bit that way, you get to the end of preseason and it feels like its dragging but then the season comes around really quickly,” Morrison said.
“We know that we are well prepared and we have a good preseason under our belt, we will take full confidence into the game that we have done what we needed to do leading in.
“We are very keen to get started, Melbourne are a quality opposition and I think it will set our season up really well if we can perform well against them.
“The group is pumped and we are keen to get into it.”
The Cats came within four points of making their first AFLW Grand Final in 2023, an impressive feat for a team that has been consistently improving for a number of years.
Between the coaches and players, Geelong are looking to use the learnings and motivation from last year to take the next step in 2024.
Morrison opened up on the mindset the Cats are taking into this season, as they look to build on last year.
“The messaging has been really strong all preseason, that we are giving ourselves every opportunity and every chance to compete,” Morrison said.
“Dan has been really clear on that messaging, that you set yourself up and go into games with that opportunity.
“We will land where we will land, but we are really excited that we have got a group that is continuing to get better and continuing to improve week on week.
“We will go in with that mindset and see what happens.”
