Cameron Ling and Meg McDonald talked all things Geelong ahead of a big week of Cats footy on this week’s episode of ‘To the Final Bell.’

Recapping the AFLW Cats Opening Game

(Timestamp: 0:31 – 8:10)

Cameron Ling: “In a first game when there are some nerves out there, it felt like it was led by some of the best players and leaders who stood up.

Georgie Prespakis led the way, Amy McDonald and Nina Morrison were superb, those quality players set the standard right from round one."

Meg McDonald: “The mids are absolute workhorses. Amy brought the pressure right through from start to finish which we love, helped us lock it in and get that goal that got us within a kick late.

I can't fault anyone’s intent on the day, Jackie Parry often had to compete against multiple defenders and was really strong, gave off two goals and kicked two herself.

Becky Webster was back in defence rebounding and intercepting really well.”

Looking Ahead to Thursday’s Qualifying Final

(Timestamp: 11:13 – 17:41)

Cameron Ling: “As we look towards Port Adelaide, you can't help but focus on three players in particular. They play in a certain part of the ground which becomes very important in Finals; Connor Rozee, Jason Horne-Francis and Zak Butters.

With Geelong's new midfield that they have built nicely throughout the season, it will be a fascinating matchup in that part of the ground."

Meg McDonald: “I think in terms of bursting through the front of a stoppage, Patrick Dangerfield didn't play the last time we played Port when they came down here.

Tom Stewart is playing a totally different role, I think when Stewie is in the midfield his ability to play that cover position hopefully accounts for some of their front exits."

Previewing AFLW Week 2 Clash

(Timestamp: 8:12 – 9:28)

Meg McDonald: “We have never beaten North Melbourne, so we are always up for the challenge each and every year.

We got close in the same fixture last year and they went on to make the Grand Final, they were absolutely dominant in the rematch last weekend.

What will work to our advantage is that their footy is somewhat similar to Melbourne's, so we are best prepared and we think it will let us know where we are at in relation to the best in the competition."

VFL Cats Update

(Timestamp: 17:42 – 20:15)

Cameron Ling: “They take on the Southport Sharks this Saturday here at GMHBA Stadium, a home final and obviously now a cut-throat Semi Final.”

Meg McDonald: “I was noting before the challenge of VFL footy. They have had such an impressive and solid season, yet at the same time they function as that place AFL listed players can return.

You have those that are in there and very much part of the side, but then you have players like Tom Hawkins and Cam Guthrie hopefully this week that will come in temporarily to get some match fitness.

That can be hard to navigate, I think that is a challenge coming up against stand alone clubs that have that continuity.”
