With the 2024 AFL season now done and dusted, it is time to look back on some of Geelong’s iconic moments from the year.
This series will recap the Cats top ten moments and games from the season, which saw them return to the Finals after missing out in 2023.
Kicking off the recap we hit the rewind button all the way back to the Cats opening round of the season, when Geelong opened the brand-new Joel Selwood Stand under the lights at GMHBA Stadium.
Celebrating one of the Club’s greatest ever champions, the new stand was flooded with blue and white as the Cats hosted St Kilda to commence 2024.
After four premierships, six All-Australian’s, 355 games and the Cats longest serving captain (among plenty of other accolades), it was a fitting tribute to hoist Selwood’s name into Geelong folklore in 2024.
While he was not a noted goalkicker during his career, Selwood lined up and slotted one more major to officially open his stand and kick off the Cats season.
Among the pre-game festivities, it was almost easy to forget that there was still a game of football to be played.
Exciting new draftee, Shaun Mannagh made his AFL debut while another young gun, Ollie Dempsey took the league by storm with a dazzling three-goal haul in the first half.
There were highlights galore as the Cats jumped out to a 13-point lead at the main break, Jeremy Cameron putting through an early goal of the year contender with a sensational goal from the pocket.
A three goal burst midway through the last quarter put the Cats 21 points clear with less than eight minutes on the clock, looking to cruise to an impressive opening round win.
But the Saints had other ideas, piling on three goals of their own in a four minute stretch to set up a desperate finish.
With the game on the line it was the Geelong skipper, Patrick Dangerfield who stood tall launching home the game sealing goal with less than a minute remaining.
Dangerfield received 10 coaches votes for his prolific display, while Ollie Dempsey was awarded an AFL Rising Star nomination for his impressive performance.
From the important win to the honour for a Club legend, it was an incredible night all round to kick off Geelong’s 2024 campaign.
