Geelong’s AFLW season came to a close against the Crows in Week 10 and although the Cats won’t feature in finals, there are still plenty of positives to take out of the year.
With the home and away season over, let's take a look a some of the key stats that the Cats put forward in season 2024.
Defenders
Starting down back with some trademark Geelong run and carry, Becky Webster lead that department with 13 Running Bounces which placed her third in the competition for that stat. Becky had a career year with 220 Total Disposals and 3737 Metres Gained, giving Geelong some zip out of the backline.
Helping with Geelong’s attacking transition was the ever reliable Chantel Emonson, who ranked fifth in the AFLW with 59 Rebound 50’s, a prime starter of Geelong's offensive forays. Chantel had a Kick Efficiency Rating of 78.6% which was the highest for the Cats, and her 88 Effective Kicks saw her finish in the top 10 in the competition.
Anna-Rose Kennedy’s eye catching season saw her star in the backline, and her growth helped to assist Claudia Gunjaca and Meg McDonald down back. Anna-Rose recorded 38 One Percenters which saw her rank 13th in the competition, 27 spoils which was ranked 18th in the AFLW, and out of her 17 Contested Defensive One On Ones she only lost three, a true breakout year for a rising star.
Claudia Gunjaca stood tall down back, with the ninth most Contested Defensive One On Ones in the competition (22), only losing four. She ranked eighth for One Percent Efforts with 43, 18th for Intercept Possessions and ninth in the competition for Spoils with 35.
Midfield
It all starts out of the middle and Geelong’s most consistent on-baller this season was Nina Morrison.
With 43 clearances (33rd in the AFLW) from her 229 Disposals (18th), Morrison contributed all over the ground to be a damaging and persistent force against her opponents.
She was the number one ranked player in the competition for Defensive Half Pressure Acts (151), but still finished equal fifth with seven goal assists to go with her five goals, proving her determination to assist at both ends of the ground. Morrison also finished in the top 20 in the competition for Score Involvements. In the middle Morrison's 78 Tackles saw her rank 14th in the league, resulting in one of her best seasons so far.
Young superstar Georgie Prespakis was hampered by injury early, but still managed to break into the AFLW's top 20 for Clearances with 50 for the year, 14 of them being Centre Clearances ranking her 14th in the comp. Prespakis’ 114 Contested Possessions saw her finish 22nd for that stat. She was also named in the 22Under22 Squad for the fourth consecutive year, with the final team being selected on the 20th of November.
Forwards
Geelong’s forward line was spearheaded by Irish sensation Aishling Moloney, with the unique player breaking the AFLW Goal-kicking Record and winning the Leading Goal-kicker award, alongside Brisbane’s Taylor Smith, with a remarkable 21 goals.
Moloney was a force to be reckoned with up forward, taking 19 Marks Inside 50 to rank tied for fourth in the competition. She also gathered 10 Forward 50 Ground Ball Gets ranking her 14th, proving she could do it in the air and at ground level. At times she pushed further up the ground taking 11 Marks On Lead (T4th in the AFLW) and helping contribute to scoring chains with 55 Score Involvements (5th in comp).
Helping support aerially up forward was the ever reliable Jackie Parry who registered 12 Goals placing her 12th in the AFLW, a close tally to her 16 goals last year (which included two extra games). Parry’s marking was a highlight of this season with her 10 Contested Marks (14th), 13 Marks Inside 50 (11th) and 38 Marks Total (24th) seeing her ranking in the top 30 for all stats. Parry’s keen eye inside 50 helped her contribute six Goal Assists (9th) and place in the top 20 for Score Involvements.
The surprise packet on the season, livewire forward Mikayla Bowen burst onto the scene with a new role and had a big impact. Bowen kicked five Goals in 2024 along with her five Goal Assists (top 20 in the AFLW), and became a consistent threat for defenders with her manic pressure efforts. Bowen ranked 12th in the competition for Pressure Acts with 205, and finished 25th for Total Tackles (68). Her 21 Forward 50 Ground Ball Gets saw her place 10th in the league, as she was constantly at the fall of the ball looking to add to Geelong’s scoring ability.
