It is a number that has seen plenty of success, now Jack Martin will write his own chapter in the number 19 as he commences his career at Geelong.

Perhaps the most recognisable figure to wear the number 19 was Geelong great, Neville Bruns who starred for the Cats across 15 seasons.

Bruns played 223 games for Geelong between 1978 and 1992, featuring in two Grand Finals and dominating through the midfield and on the wing.

It was a significant moment on Monday, when Bruns attended Geelong's pre-season training and presented Martin with the number 19.

"You do hope that whoever gets your number plays for a long time, someone that can equal or even go better than you in terms of games and win a few premierships," Bruns said.

"That is what you want, we have had some good players wear it but unfortunately they just haven't gone on to really cement their spots.

"I am hoping Jack can do that and I am sure that he can, I know how good he can play. You don't play 100 games with one club and 50 with another, without having the ability to play good football.

"He just has to get his body right and I have no doubt, he is probably in as good an environment anywhere in the game here at Geelong, where they will get you right and ready to play."

Martin will get the chance to create his own legacy in the number, when he features in his first season for the Cats in 2025.

After playing over 150 AFL games during stints at Carlton and the Gold Coast, the 29 year old signed with Geelong as a free agent at the end of 2024.

Martin touched on the privilege of receiving his new number from Bruns, while also discussing his focus heading into next year.

"I am very excited, very humbled to be wearing the number 19," Martin said.

"Obviously Neville played over 200 games in it, so like I said I am extremely I am extremely humbled and honoured to be wearing it.

"I think for me it is not so much proving people wrong, I think I just want to prove to myself that I can play AFL football.

"I just want to get out there and showcase my skill, and then play for my family so I am looking forward to next year."
