Paul Couch, Andrew Bews and Mark Bairstow

Bews on the 1992 Cats team

We were really lucky, when you looked our forward line we had Ablett, Brownless and a lot of small forwards who kicked plenty of goals.

Paul Brown was another one who popped up in this particular game, six goals Browny well done.

There was a bunch of guys more than capable, all we had to do was supply and give them a chance, if they were on their day then look out. That was the day. It didn't start out looking like it was going to be a record day, but I knew that we were on song.

It was coming out of the middle, it was going forward. If it was coming out of defence, it was hitting targets up through the middle. Field position was in our favour, it didn't really matter and unfortunately the boys from Brisbane that day weren't up to it.

Bews on kicking a goal to tie the record

I was lucky enough to get my hands on the footy in the last quarter inside 50 and I forget who passed it to me, but I went back and I saw Peter Riccardi move into a beautiful position.

Now 99 times out of 100 I would have kicked it to 'Ricco,' but not on this occasion my friend. I had a look at them and I thought, I haven't got one today and all of these other players; wingmen, half backs have all shot down, Hinkley had a couple and he loved playing outside the defensive 50, a lot.

It was an opportunity and I thought, nah I am kicking one, I am having one today and I want my name on the sheet for at least one goal. I don't know how well or how poorly I played, I just thought I am going to slip one of these through.

I went back and said no 'Ricco,' I've got this and I did. I knew it was going to go through, when it did I wondered if we could get anymore cause there wasn't much time left on the clock.

Bews on the record breaking moment

We went back to the middle and the ball popped out to the half forward flank, and Billy Brownless was on the end of it.

I thought oh big Wilbur, I wonder if we have a chance for another one and then the siren goes.

He drops the worst mongrel punt I have ever seen come off his boot. I have seen him kick them from the wing nearly, but for some reason it just fluffed off his boot and went sideways.

It wobbled away and I thought he had kicked it out on the full, but it just slipped through for a behind.

We go off the field and everyone is banging on about the record, even Blighty spoke about it. He said 'this is it fellas, you are now world record holders.'

And we still are! Nobody has beat us yet.

Bews on watching son, Jed play for Geelong

Jed told me before he started, he said 'Dad don't be embarrassed or bashful about this, but I am taller than you, I am faster than you, I am much better looking than you and all of this stuff.'

He is a premiership player, I have got no claim to him and can not hold a candle to him. He has surpassed anything that I have done that really means anything in football, and I take my hat off to him in the toughest period that I have seen of AFL football.

He has been able to carve out 10+ years and nearly 180 games, if you said a number 80 draft pick is going to be something like that for you, you would take that to the bank.

I am proud as punch.
