GEELONG coach Chris Scott has raised the possibility of utilising a rotating defensive group across the season.
The Cats boast a strong group of key defensive pillars, which could rotate through the side based on which players best-suit the opponent at hand.
Mark Blicavs, Jack Henry, Jake Kolodashnij, Harry Taylor and Lachie Henderson all have the ability to play key defensive roles, while Tom Stewart tends to play freely across the back six.
“The approach we’re trying to take with our defensive group, is we have a group of guys who are ready to play in any particular week and we’re going to go with a combination of that,” Scott says
“There’s a few guys that will be in that position a little bit this year.”
“There’s a few factors that go into the decision-making with selection, especially with key position players where the mix of your team is really important.”
Lachie Henderson has been the unlucky Cat to miss out on selection in rounds one and two, but Scott suggests he is well and truly in the frame.
“We highly expect Lachie to play a lot of AFL footy this year. He played well enough last week to show us that if he’s ready he we pick him,” Scott said.
“...I reckon he’d be just a good of a chance to play the following week (against Adelaide).”
Scott praised Harry Taylor for his first-up performance against the Magpies, completing 10 one-percenters to go with 16 disposals at 93 per cent efficiency.
“If you’re over 30, every time you play poorly it’s the beginning of the end. If you’re 20 you just had a bad day,” Scott said.
“He’s been a champion of this footy club, on and off the field. He knows and he knew through the pre-season that if it made more sense for us short and long term to play a 20-year-old that’s what we were going to do.”
“In terms of the pros out there in the AFL world he’d be right up there at the top of that list.”
