Sam Menegola has attributed the Cats’ perfect start to the season to the ability of his team to execute their game plan.
Speaking at an open training session this morning at GMHBA Stadium, Menegola told the media that a number of strong pre-seasons along with the addition of new personnel has allowed the group to work together and play cohesive football.
“We’ve just executed what we’ve been trying to execute really, really well so it’s just getting simple parts of our game plan right and we’ve been doing it for consistent periods in games. It’s not necessarily a complicated formula, we’ve just done a really good job of executing it,” Menegola explained.
“Some of the younger guys and the new guys that have come in are really good examples of the strong pre-seasons that a lot of our guys had and that’s really important to getting a whole team unit playing cohesively and playing well together.”
Menegola had 23 disposals and kicked a goal against the Crows last weekend. His defensive pressure has been in the spotlight this week following a terrific run and spoil in defence. The midfielder believes that he was simply doing his best to help the side.
“It was nice to be able to help the team. It was a moment I really enjoyed and I enjoyed seeing what it meant to my teammates but I’ve seen it too many times now,” he joked.
“Everyone’s trying to help everyone in our side at the moment, that’s a really healthy ethos to have. We’re living that really well at the moment.”
This weekend the Cats will take on GWS at home on Saturday afternoon. The Giants will come into the game on the back of a solid win against Richmond last weekend, where star forward Jeremy Cameron had 30 possessions and kicked seven goals and five behinds.
“They’ve got some really, really talented midfielders who are really damaging and clearly their forward line has some serious threats down there as well and I think their backline is probably a bit underrated.”
“We know we’re going to have to play really good footy to beat them. I think we’re just trying to keep playing the same footy that we have over the last three weeks.”
There have been questions over Tim Kelly’s fitness following an ankle injury against the Crows in the final quarter. Menegola wasn’t able to provide further insight into the injury but said there was plenty of depth amongst the squad should Kelly be unavailable.
“He (Kelly) brings a lot to our team but I think the however many guys who roll through the midfield do that as well. We know there are guys in the VFL who are playing good footy who can come in.”
