GEELONG list manager Stephen Wells says a trio of Cats will need to wait until the end of the trade and draft period to learn their fates.
Wells told NAB AFL Trade Radio yesterday the Cats had made it clear to Daniel Menzel, Jordan Murdoch and Jackson Thurlow that the club would reassess the lie of the land after the dust had settled on the trade period.
“We’ve made it very clear to them that we’ll see how the trade period goes and talk to them more after that about their future,” Wells said.
Menzel and his management can take matters into their own hands and explore the market for the mercurial Cat as the free agency period develops.
“No club spoke to us today about Daniel but that’s understandable. Daniel’s an unrestricted free-agent, the same as he was this time last year.
“He has every right to explore the options that come his way from other clubs without even involving us, so we didn’t have any discussions with other clubs today about Daniel.
“We have made it clear to Daniel and his manager that we’re just going to wait until the end of the free agency and trade period to sort all of that out. They’re very, very clear on our position and we understand their position in exploring the market as well.
Wells also said a move down the highway for the Saints’ best and fairest winner Jack Steven was unlikely.
“I can’t see anything changing in that regard. St Kilda have made it abundantly clear that he’ll be playing with St Kilda next year,” Wells said.
“We haven’t spoken to Jack. I think Jack crossed paths with a couple of our players at times in the off-season. He might have down at Lorne or wherever it was.
“We as a club have not officially met Jack since he was out of contract a couple of years ago.”
