The business end of the trade period is fast approaching with the exchange of players set to come to a halt at 8:30 pm on Wednesday night.
Here’s what’s being said around the league about the Cats’ involvement.
Brander to Geelong?
Eagles General Manager of Football Craig Vozzo was quick to pour cold water on any speculation Jarrod Brander would be in Geelong next season.
There had been talk the former Geelong Grammar student and No. 13 overall selection in last year’s NAB AFL Draft could be involved in a deal involving Tim Kelly.
“Absolutely not,” Vozzo said on 6PR on the weekend.
“We’ve looked at some pick swaps. Jarrod is contracted to our club for the next three years.
“We made a commitment to him quite a long time ago, and he won’t be considered in any of this.”
Menzel Moves
Daniel Menzel remains in limbo following the conclusion of the free agency period.
Cats list manager Stephen Wells says the club is waiting to see how the remainder of the trade period plays out.
“Anyone who’s an unrestricted free agent, if it’s not done by then (last Friday), there’s still the trade period of course,” Wells told the Geelong Advertiser.
“Nothing’s changed there (with Menzel), so let’s just see what happens in the trade period.”
Rookie Refresh
Geelong officially re-signed ruck duo Ryan Abbott and Rhys Stanley on Friday, while Sam Simpson and Jamaine Jones refreshed their rookie deals.
“They’ve agreed to be rookies again,” Wells told the Geelong Advertiser.
“We’re very excited with the way they’re progressing and they’re excited to still be with the Cats in 2019.
“Those guys (Simspon and Jones) are staying as rookies, but they will be available for selection every week.
“They get another good pre-season behind them and looking forward to next season as they develop physically as well as with that bit of experience they’ve had.”
