Respected football journalist Mike Sheahan has offered an apology to the Cats, conceding he underestimated the side’s potential.

Joining 1116 SEN’s breakfast team on Monday morning, Sheahan admitted he doubted the Cats were capable of playing the kind of football which has seen them claim the scalps of the competition’s top teams.

“I’m prepared to apologise to the Cats,” Sheahan said.

“I didn’t think they were this good. I don’t care where they play. They could play at Ayers Rock. They’ve beaten the other three best teams in the competition in the Bulldogs, Crows and Power.”

Acknowledging the work of stars Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield, the Herald Sun’s former chief football writer also heaped praise on Geelong’s second-tier players.

“Blokes like Zac Smith and Steven Motlop are playing better,” Sheahan said.

“The second tier has risen. Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield take them where they go, but those other players have helped.”

“They’re 8-3 halfway through the season and have played just three games at home.”

The Cats currently have the bye for round 12 and return in round 13 against West Coast at Subiaco Oval.
