There was a time when a sighting of Jake Kolodjashnij anywhere near forward 50 would be on par with sightings of the thylacine or Loch Ness Monster. But times have certainly changed.
The one-time defender has been free to roam in recent weeks, used predominately from a wing to great effect – and never more so than his most recent performance in the Cats’ 14-point win over Richmond.
The 22-year-old tallied 20 disposals, five marks, three clearances and four tackles against the Tigers in what was arguably his best game for the club, and told Cats Media post-match he’s loving the freedom.
“I’ve been playing on the wing in the last three weeks and just learning that craft,” Kolodjashnij said.
“[I’m] going along there nicely every week with Knighta [Matthew Knights]. I’m loving my time there and obviously a bit of hard work paid off today.”
Named Geelong’s Best Young Player at last year’s Carji Greeves Medal night, the Tasmanian says while the majority of his 42-game career has been spent in defence, he can also play his way higher up the ground.
“It did take a little bit to get used to but I’ve taken some strengths that I use in defence to the wing and it’s definitely helped me transition there.”
