Geelong coach Chris Scott is expecting Saturday's clash with Greater Western Sydney to give an indication of where both clubs sit in the pecking order.
The Cats, who were beaten by the Giants in Canberra in round two, are desperate to turn their recent form around after losing to Collingwood and Carlton in the past two weeks.
"We're just really looking at the opportunity this week," Scott said prior to his team's main training session of the week at a foggy Simonds Stadium on Thursday morning.
"It's a great chance to play against a really good opposition that's close to us on the ladder and another chance to improve our game.
"So we've made a concerted effort this week to really focus on the way we play when we play our best footy.
"We've trained really well, the boys are really positive that we can put in a good performance against a good team.
"It's a really good opportunity for both teams to go out and have a crack and get a clearer picture of where they sit in the competition."
The Cats will head into the game in third place on the ladder, with the Giants snapping at their heels in fourth.
"I think [the Giants have] shown every sign that they're going to be a contender this year," Scott said.
"So therein lies the opportunity for us - to play a really good team back at our home venue and look to improve our game.
"If we can find a way to beat them that sort of speaks to where we sit in the competition.
"We rate them up in the top quarter of the competition, that's for sure."
The clash with the Giants begins a tough three-week block for the Cats, with games against North Melbourne and the Western Bulldogs to follow.
"The hits just keep on coming," Scott said.
The Cats are expected to make a couple of changes for Saturday's game, with forwards Daniel Menzel and Lincoln McCarthy likely to return.
Rhys Stanley remains in contention to play despite suffering a foot sprain in the loss to the Blues last weekend.
