The Cats may have righted some wrongs through last week’s 23-point win over the Western Bulldogs, but Chris Scott says defence is still an area of concern.
Consistently a top-two defensive side in the competition last season, Geelong is now ranked 13th in the AFL, averaging 93.2 points against.
Speaking on this week’s episode of Momentum Energy’s #AskTheCoach, Scott identified a lack of pressure inside the Cats’ forward half as a key factor in the shift.
“The part that’s shifted that we’re not comfortable with is our ability to force turnovers in our forward half,” Scott said.
“The opposition are getting through a little bit further and we’re having to defend deeper on the ground.”
“Some people have suggested that that’s by design, and there have been some slight tweaks to help us get better looks when we go inside 50. But certainly we’d like to balance that up a little bit better by defending higher up the ground, which we think will lead to better numbers in defence overall.”
