G'day again Cats fans. Welcome to our first Mighty Monday column. Each Monday after the Cats play we'll have a look at the five mightiest efforts from the weekend's game. And we're keen to get your help every week. Send us your suggestions by using the #MightyMonday hashtag.
Here are our five favourite things from the Mighty Cats' eight-point NAB Challenge loss to Gold Coast in Townsville on Sunday.
1. Cameron Guthrie's banana kick goal
With the Cats trailing by 12 points midway through the third quarter, Guthrie ran onto a loose ball just inside the Cats' forward 50m line. He coolly used some fancy footwork to shrug a couple of tackles, then cleverly curled the ball through the big sticks using the outside of his boot. It was a very impressive effort from a player expected to take his game to the next level this season.
2. Mitch Clark's final-quarter burst
Big Mitch looked rusty during much of the contest, which was hardly a surprise; it was his first game of footy since round four, 2013. But he came to life with two team-lifting goals in the last quarter. Clark's first goal came after he received a generous pass from Mathew Stokes. He was mobbed by his teammates after kicking truly. A minute later Clark showed some great agility by snaring the ball in a pack, crashing through a tackle and kicking a running goal that put the Cats in front for the first time since the opening quarter. Clark, who had a couple of short stints in the ruck, finished the afternoon with nine disposals, two marks, two goals and 48 AFL Fantasy points. Despite being tipped to play only a half, he spent 89 per cent of the game on the field.
3. Harry Taylor's accurate disposal
The hot and humid conditions made for a scrappy game, with the Cats struggling to hit their targets at times. But Taylor had no such problems. The two-time All Australian, who played his customary role in a key defensive post, ended the clash with 22 disposals at 91 per cent efficiency. The only Cats player to win more of the ball than Taylor was evergreen star Jimmy Bartel, who finished with 26 disposals and 110 AFL Fantasy points.
4. The teamwork between Steven Motlop and Darcy Lang
Motlop and Lang were two of Geelong's most impressive performers against the Suns, and they teamed up in great fashion. Motlop found Lang with a skilful pass during the third quarter, and Lang duly steered his kick through for a goal. The pair repeated the dose in the final quarter when Motlop again found Lang close to goal with a pin-point pass. Once again, Lang put his shot straight through. Lang finished the game with 14 disposals to go with his two majors, while Motlop tallied 22 disposals and a brilliant 52m supergoal that sailed through in the last minute of the game.
5. The seemingly nerveless debut of Nakia Cockatoo
Wearing the No.5 guernsey made famous by Polly Farmer and Gary Ablett Snr, Cockatoo had an impressive first outing in the blue and white hoops, gliding around the Tony Ireland Stadium and putting his body on the line when required. Cockatoo, who was the No.10 pick in last year's national draft, rarely seemed flustered or nervous as he tallied 10 disposals (at 80 per cent efficiency), took two marks and laid six tackles.
