Fremantle v Geelong
Sunday February 9
2.10pm (5.10pm AEST)
Fremantle Oval

Last time we met

Fremantle 6.13.49 def Geelong 2.1.13 at GMHBA Stadium

These two teams have met just once before in Round 6 last season.

Despite being within one point at half-time, the Dockers overran the Cats in the second half kicking four unanswered goals.

Gemma Houghton kicked two goals and midfielder Kiara Bowers laid 19 tackles for the Dockers.

Fremantle walked away with a 36 point victory.

The lowdown

Both Geelong and Fremantle will be looking to start their season with a W next to their name.

Geelong have named three debutants for their Round One clash with Amy McDonald, Millie Brown and Madisen Maguire to play their first game in the hoops.

The Cats have gone with a smaller line-up choosing to name only one ruck, Aasta O’Connor, and a relatively small forward line having left out talls Kate Darby and Maddie Boyd.

Expect a fast paced game with plenty of physicality.

Opposition focus

The Fremantle that takes to the field this Sunday will be significantly different to the team Geelong played last season.

With the West Coast Eagles joining the competition this year, the talent in Western Australia has been split between the two teams.

The Dockers have named eight new faces, seven of whom will be making their AFLW debut.

Despite their new look, the Dockers retained key position players Kiara Bowers, Kara Antonio, Ebony Antonio and Gemma Houghton.

Mia-Rae Clifford who played for the Cats last season will be coming up against her old side for the first time.

Clifford played as a small forward at Geelong and is expected to play a similar role for Fremantle this season.

Player to watch

You can’t go past the return of Nina Morrison.

The 19-year-old has only played one AFLW game, but did enough in that match to show just why she was taken with the number one pick in the 2018 national draft.

Unfortunately the youngster ruptured her ACL in the week following her debut ruling her out for the rest of the 2019 season.

Morrison returns this Sunday.

Her unrivalled workrate and silky skills will make an enormous difference to Geelong.
