Joel Selwood says the playing group are sticking together during this time

Geelong legend Joel Selwood says the Cats players are sticking together despite being unable to spend time with each other.

Selwood revealed on Fox Footy that a group chat keeps the players connected.

“We have a WhatsApp group that is lighting up,” Selwood said.

“We’ve had some exciting things with Gryan Miers turning 21 which is exciting, so we celebrate that. We’ve had a baby join the group today – I can’t say who as their (extended) family may not know yet.

“At the moment we can train with one person, so we have grouped the boys a bit. Sam Menegola has been the leader of that. He makes sure the programs are hard enough during this period. Whoever does it best might find a couple of extra wins at the end of the year.”

Selwood understands the difficulty of the situation caused by COVID-19, but feels for those that are having a harder time than the players.

“It’s a unique circumstance we are dealing with,” Selwood said.

“It’s scary and sad in many ways. Going to the footy club last Monday and seeing a lot of people stood down without work and without pay (is hard). I’ve been there for 14 years and a lot of these people are friends. That was difficult.”

The superstar Cat is also getting creative as he stays in shape pending a return to action later in the year.

“The hard part is being creative in what you can use around the place,” he said.

“If I’m not at the footy club you can usually find a park and use the monkey bars for chin ups and a seat for dips, but you can’t do that anymore! So it's being creative. What I like out of it is you have to be a self-motivator. For a lot of our guys it will be a testing time but one that will not hurt them.”
