GEELONG midfielder Mitch Duncan still hopes to play a part in the finals but concedes it's unrealistic he will take part in the must-win clash with West Coast on Friday night.

Duncan didn't return after leaving the ground in the second quarter of Geelong's 10-point defeat to Collingwood with a left medial ligament strain.

The minor premiers will exit September in straight sets if they can't quash the Eagles' hopes for back-to-back flags.

Duncan told TAB Radio he would discover more about his scan results on Monday.

"It's not looking too good but hopefully the scans show some positive signs that I'll be able to play again this finals series," Duncan said.

"It's just more a medial ligament (injury) – things you can come back from quite quick, if you've got the stability there. So it's just a matter of how stable we can get it.

"Hopefully the boys can have a win in the coming game against the Eagles and progress further, and that will give me a bit more realistic chance to come back.

"It's probably more how I feel once I start running. The next week will be tough to come back for. It's disappointing but these things happen."

Cats Jed Bews (ankle) and Luke Dahlhaus (corkie) played out the game after early scares, while Gary Rohan received treatment on his left hamstring after pulling up sore early in the last term.
