Cats great Billy Brownless has revealed the zinger he dealt to a hapless AFL Record seller in Brisbane following an extraordinary individual effort.

Brownless was unstoppable against the Brisbane Bears in Round 4, 1991 at the first ever game at the GABBA.

With flowing blonde locks and a very athletic physique, Brownless decimated his Bears opponents to finish with 11 goals, 27 disposals and 14 marks.

“That was one of those days out.” Brownless told To The Final Bell presented by Panther Tyres.

“It was at the GABBA, the old GABBA, and you used to have a dog track around it. It was a very small ground and the Bears weren’t going that well.”

“I kicked 11 goals four (behinds) from centre-half forward, just had a good day out.

And 19 years on, the 11 goals still stands as the best individual effort in an AFL game.

“Believe this or not, it’s still the record for the most amount of goals at the GABBA.” Brownless said.

“And they’ve had Fev up there, they’ve had Alistair Lynch, Jonathan Brown, they’ve had everyone up there at the GABBA, it’s still the most goals at the GABBA.”

With Brownless now a media performer across TV and radio, one of his returns to the ground was an opportunity to gloat about the achievement.

“Even now when I go working there with the media, and the kid’s selling the Record and he goes ‘Do you wanna Record?’ and I go “nah mate, I’ve already got it here!” “

Brownless’ run of luck in Brisbane in 1991 soon ran out though. 

“I still remember me and Barry Stoneham went out that night, and we missed our flight!”
