After being one of four Cats to be selected in the original 42 man squad, former Sydney Swan Jonathan Simpkin will be the sole representative from the Cats when the Victorian Football takes on the Western Australian Football League at Leederville Oval on Saturday.
Simpkin who was named on the bench has kicked 11 goals and appeared in the best players for 4 of the 6 matches this season. Co-captain Matthew Firman, wingman Ben Raidme and rookie Ben Johnson were all cut from the squad earlier this week.
Simpkin who will wear number 21 in the big clash, has been something of a shining light for the VFL Cats in a disappointing season to date. Simpkin was recruited to the Geelong VFL side and despite a number of injury setbacks early on he has been a regular over the past 3 seasons playing 29 games and kicking 27 goals.
The former Geelong Falcon was taken at pick no.16 in the 2006 rookie draft by the Sydney Swans and elevated to the senior list for the following season. Despite being named as an emergency on a number of occasions and representing the side during the NAB Cup, he did not manage a senior game before being delisted at the end of the 2007 season.
Simpkin joins a list of distinguished Geelong players to have represented the Victorian Football League in recent seasons including current co-captain and premiership player Matthew Firman (2008), premiership captain James Byrne (2004,07), Port Adelaide sharp shooter Jason Davenport (2007), dual AFL premiership player Shannon Byrnes (2004), Carlton Best & Fairest winner Andrew Carazzo (2001) and Paul Lindsay (1999).
