Dangerous wings must be clipped
Saturday night the Cats will have to make sure that Jordan Lewis doesn't take flight
Last Sunday when the Dockers and the Hawks went head-to-head it became obvious very quickly which wings the Cats would have to clip this Saturday night.
Sitting on a bag of 212 games and two premierships, Jordan Lewis had a career best performance of 44 disposals during the Hawk's close defeat against the firing Dockers.
According to AFL Journalist Adam McNicol, the veteran midfielder will bring the x-factor to the Hawk's outfit as he carries all the right tools to upset his opponents, including clearances, contested possessions and goals.
“There’s no doubt that Jordan Lewis is perhaps the most in-form Hawk right at the minute and there’s no doubt that you’ve got to keep him under control,” McNicol told Cats TV on Argue the Toss.
“That wasn’t happening last week when Lewis got those 44 touches, so the fact is you’ve got to try and keep him on a leash because he accumulates the ball, he wins it in close and on the outside and he pushes forward and kicks goals.
“He’s a very very dangerous player, a talented player and an experienced player, so that whole big game atmosphere doesn’t phase him.”
With both Geelong and Hawthorn on the brink of finals and a likely meeting, McNicol says he’ll be surprised if both teams reveal all their cards on Saturday night at the MCG.
However, McNicol says it’s going to be one tough task to accomplish with both teams dertermined to secure a top-two-position after Round 23.
“The fact is both these teams are playing for a top two spot so they really have to win but do you really want to give away all your secrets given that Geelong’s second and Hawthorn’s third?” McNicol said.
“At the moment we’re thinking they’re going to play in a qualifying final, so there’s a real element here of keeping a few aces up your sleeve while also trying to win the game.
“This is why you (the coaches) earn the big bucks because you’ve got to be able to come up with a good plan for this time of the year.”
Although it’s clear the Hawks have their ominous player set in concrete, McNicol believes the Cats have their own when it comes to the formidable forward Tom Hawkins, despite his goalless game last Friday night.
“There’s no doubt he's an x-factor, don’t worry about last week, he’s going to have an off night every now and then,” McNicol explained.
“But big Tomahawk is a massive reason why Geelong can win this game…"
