VFL: Punt Road battle
Paul Hood reviews Geelong VFL's post match and tells us how the Cats plan to dismantle the Tigers at Punt Road Oval this Sunday.
Cats TV spoke to Geelong’s Academy Co-ordinator, Paul Hood, about the VFL’s 25-point win over the Roosters and the return of the curtain-raiser at Punt Road this Sunday.
Going into the fourth round after a loss to the Hawks, the Cats identified specific areas of play that allowed them to re-boost their dominance and force over North Ballarat's leading contenders. Overall, Hood was impressed with how the game unfolded.
“We had a real focus on stopping the opposition on marking the ball this week and being a lot braver with our attack, and we were able to do both of those things for large parts of the game,” Hood told Cats TV.
Geelong’s Darcy Lang, who was pick 16 in last year’s draft, gave a best on ground performance in his fourth VFL game.
This was an encouraging result for the young Cat, considering he was restricted to minimal training during preseason after enduring a broken leg before the 2013 National Daft.
“Darcy made some really good decisions with the ball. His ball use was terrific and he did well setting up his teammates, he was really selfless in the way he attacked,” Hood said.
“We played Darcy as a forward, he’s worked really hard at his conditioning as a midfielder the last few weeks, and playing as a forward this week he found time and space well – it was a really good performance from him.”
This Sunday Geelong’s VFL will play their first game at Punt Road before the clash at the MCG, allowing fans the rare opportunity to catch both battles between the Cats and the Tigers.
“Punt Road Oval is going to be a great occasion, the old curtain-raiser has come back, it’s a great day for the fans to watch it at Punt Road and then walk over to the MCG and have a jam doughnut on the way,” Hood said.
