Cats TV spoke to Hamish McIntosh and journalist Scott Gullan about Collingwood’s upper hand over Geelong, which has left the Cats without a win since the 2011 Grand Final.

Last time the two rivals met in Round 8 2013, Collingwood held the lead in every quarter and ended the Cats seven game streak by six points.

According to Gullan, it’s the Pies intensity in the backline that keeps the Cats from breaking through.

“Why they continually beat Geelong even when Geelong was at their very very best was that swarming pressure and they match up well, they have a very defensive clamp (on Geelong),” Gullan told Cats TV.

“We saw a little bit of that last week… as they played really well against Sydney.

Meanwhile Gullan believes that the Cats have the players to tip the Pies over the edge this Saturday night at the MCG.

“I think the Cats will have the advantage – Nathan Brown went down and they have some issues in defence, so I would say looking at the evidence from the first two weeks the Cats are in better nick with Hamish and Dawson against (Brodie) Grundy,” Gullan said.

McIntosh is also confident the Cats have the form to topple the Pies, however, he realises their senior coach Nathan Buckley keeps a tight ship and has bred his players to execute high contested footy.

“You can see Nathan has them well drilled and it’s all about contested footy and that’s the number one principle now in AFL footy, you’ve got to win that to win games,” McIntosh explained.

“We need to bring that into our game and it’s something we’ve done really well in the first two weeks and it’s something we’re going to have to do Saturday night in a big game against a big club to hopefully break that streak.”
