In the mix vs St Kilda
See who is putting their hand up to take on the Saints
Bradley Hartman
Hartman continued his fine run of form in the VFL finishing with 17 disposals, five marks, three inside 50s and a goal against Port Melbourne. The beauty of Hartman is he is very different to any player in the Cats side. Hard running, good inside and outside the contest and calm in front of goals, Hartman is doing everything he can to get an AFL debut.
Taylor Hunt
Matthew Knights spoke post match of the leadership shown by senior players including Hunt in Saturday’s win. Tasked with a variety of roles, Hunt excelled all over the ground. Finishing with 24 disposals, three tackles, six marks, Hunt will be working hard to fix the problems that saw him omitted from the senior side.
Jarrad Jansen
Any Cats fan watching Saturday’s game will be very excited for the future of Jarrad Jansen. Playing against seasoned campaigners from Port Melbourne, Jansen was tough, committed and devastating. His 11 disposals, eight tackles, nine clearances didn’t tell the full story but what did were his consecutive goals in the third term were he burst out of the middle banging them home from 50m both times.
Shane Kersten
A tough day for Kersten against the Borough with two, sometimes three defenders squaring up against him in the forward 50. To Kersten’s credit he didn’t give up finishing with 10 disposals, five marks and one goal. Although not registered in the stats sheet, his ability to provide a contest inside 50 and not get outmarked was super encouraging especially with the Cats on the lookout for another big forward.
Jake Kolodjashnij
Whilst his fellow draftees Lang and Jansen showing skill and dash through the middle, it was Kolodjashnij down back who was doing the little things the coaches love. The young defender kept Port Melbourne forward Julian Rowe to just five touches in a performance Matthew Knights described as ‘outstanding’.
Darcy Lang
Whilst some said Lang was a surprise pick so early in the first round, the Cats know they have got a future AFL star. With poise and skill very rarely seen by such a young player, Lang will have excited the AFL coaches with Saturday’s performance. Finishing with 13 disposals, three tackles, four inside 50s, Lang’s bullet passes were the difference for the Cats spotting up numerous targets inside 50.
Jackson Sheringham
After a run of games in the AFL, Sheringham returned to the VFL and finished with 14 disposals, six tackles, three clearances and a goal. His hard running, bullish contested work and nice finishing showed that the rookie listed player will continue to put his hand up for selection.
Dawson Simpson
Simpson was a late withdrawal from Friday night’s game due to team balance. The Cats still aren’t finalised on their best ruck set up and may look to re-introduce Simpson who will be better for the week off.
Jackson Thurlow
The Cats hierarchy will be pleased with the efforts of Thurlow in Saturday’s game. After impressing in his debut season last year, Thurlow has only the one AFL game next to his name in 2014. But after Saturday’s 22 disposals, eight marks, six rebounds from 50 and one goal, his chance to rejoin the AFL side may be close.
Travis Varcoe
Runs down the wing, lightening fast give and go’s, leadership in spades, Saturday saw the Travis Varcoe we know and love. With Varcoe missing Friday’s AFL game due to a family funeral, and his inspirational performance against the Borough, expect him to line up against the Saints on Sunday. Varcoe’s final numbers were 21 disposals, 10 handball receives and four inside 50s.
*Allen Christensen
The reason for Christensen’s star next to his name is that both Scott and Christensen have said they will not rush the star on-baller back after his back surgery. But if Christensen can put up more performances like Saturday’s 18 disposals, eight clearances and four tackles, expect to see him in the AFL side sooner rather than later.
