Mecurial Geelong star Steve Johnson says he wants a return of the international rules series where the best players from the AFL participate.

Johnson has revealed in a steviejohnson20.com.au blog that he was contacted by AFL Football Operations manager Mark Evans and asked for his thoughts on the series.

“He wanted to know whether I would be interested in playing in the International Rules Series if the opportunity presented itself later this year.” Johnson blogged.

“This is a game that I have always wanted to be involved in, so my immediate answer was ‘yes’. Mark said they were looking to place greater importance on which players were selected this year to ensure it was a fantastic spectacle and one that players could be very proud of being involved in.”

The AFL sent an indigenous all-star team to represent the league in Ireland in October, 2013. The side was beaten by a combined 101 points in its two test series with the Irish.

Johnson said he believed the appointment of Hawthorn premiership coach Alistair Clarkson only strengthened the potential of the concept.

“The appointment of Alistair Clarkson only enhances the likelihood of this being a success. Clarko is not going to waste his time if he doesn't see merit in the concept. He is such a highly regarded and well respected coach that I'm sure anyone who gets a chance to play under him will learn a thing or two.” Johnson said.
