George Burbury has made a triumphant return from injury in Geelong VFL’s third successive preseason win at Simonds Stadium today, helping the Cats to a solid victory over Footscray 16.9 (105) to 10.13 (73).

A fearless Burbury (12 disposals, 2 goals) played a key role in the Geelong’s success against the towering Bulldogs, taking solid marks and attacking the ball in a manner that has become typical of his playing style. Though injuring himself a mere six weeks ago, Burbury was keen to use the practice match to abolish any doubt as to whether his form would be as it was during the AFL NAB cup, for himself and for his faithful fans.

‘It was good to get the first match out of the way (post injury). Being cleaned up and walking away unscathed in the first contest today was actually a real confidence booster.’

‘To be honest, I’m just trying to put my best foot forward and be ready to go if I’m lucky enough to get the chance to play in the AFL.’

The Bulldogs, who at times maintained dominance through sheer vertical size and strength, were unable to gain the upper hand over the Cats at any point in the match, much to the delight of the coaches and fans alike.

Brad Hartman, who had an interrupted preseason with a knee injury, played arguably the best match of his career, securing 14 disposals and displaying a confidence and surety in his ability that has not previously been seen.

Jesse Stringer (17 disposals) and Jordan Schroder (12 disposals) were also clutch players in the centre and forward 50, sustaining a relentless intensity and hunger for the contest that inspired the team to continue their attack throughout the match.

Josh Walker gave his chances of an AFL call up another boost today as he once again demonstrated his versatility, spending game time in the forward, backline and as the second ruckman in the centre.

First year recruit Jake Kolodjashnij, a young man fast becoming a fan favourite, once again maintained a strong presence down back against the dominant Footscray forward line.

Coach Paul Hood, who stepped in as head coach for the match, was rapt with the boys’ efforts and praised their unwillingness to concede defeat.

‘Last week we were a little up and down with our defence, so it was great to see the boys grind it out today for four quarters on such a hot day.’

‘When we struggling or tired we were able to just take the edge off and avoid being scored against, which was a real positive.’

With the season beginning next week, the Geelong VFL team will be trekking down to QEO on Friday the 4th of April for their round one match against Bendigo, starting at 7pm. Be sure to follow @GeelongVFL on Twitter if you are unable to attend for live updates throughout the match.
