Young Cat Nathan Vardy is seeing the benefits of positivity, after a severe hip injury ripped his run of nine AFL games from underneath him.

"I'm a positive sort of person," Vardy told the Herald Sun. "Everyone sort of reckons as soon as you start to think negative, that's when things take a turn for the worse.’’

The severity of Vardy’s injury had many people thinking that the young forward’s career was over, however despite these assumptions he was desperate not to lose sight of his goal of getting back on the ground.

"When I did the injury, I just always thought that I would come back - even when some people were telling me that I might not,’’ Vardy said

Last year Vardy joined the Cats’ for the last two matches of the season where he received nothing but support and admiration from his teammates.

It was a feeling that will stay with him forever.

"The best moment was probably just before I ran out. The boys all huddled around me in the warm-up," Vardy said.

"That was one of the greatest feelings of my life.’’

Since then Vardy has continued to train well during the preseason and is looking really good, despite experiencing a little bit of pain at the beginning, which went away the following week after and hasn’t returned.

"My body is feeling really good. I have got a lot of training in me now this summer, which was a worry for me leading into the pre-season,’’ Vardy explained.

"So hopefully my hip troubles are all behind me."

Vardy will not only return to the 2013 season without his hip worries but also without his number 36 guernsey, after recently receiving a surprise text message from one of the great Geelong defenders of all time, Matthew Scarlet asking if he’d like to give up his number 36 for his (Scarlet’s) number 30.

"He just sent me a message, and said, 'Have you got any interest in the No.30? I would really like you to wear it, but if you don't want to, that's fine'," Vardy recalled.

"I just said, 'I would love to'. There is probably no bigger honour at the footy club now.’’

The inspiring forward is now itching to get out there in the number 30 guernsey and play footy for the club and more importantly the fans.

‘’I can't wait for the footy to start again," Vardy said.
