Assistant coach Dale Amos gives his rundown of the Cats playing list
This year the 22-year-old forward received his fourth knee reconstruction only two games after he made his comeback in Geelong’s VFL side. Unfortunately his knee, which buckled during round three against Box Hill Hawks, has now kept him from Geelong’s front line for over two seasons.
Amos' review:
Everybody at the footy club, their hearts sank when he did his knee again. But everything has been really positive with his surgery and everything's going really well with his rehab at the moment. We'll be patient and conservative with him and give him every opportunity to be able to come back and play. It's very difficult for guys to cope with one knee reco and he's just had his fourth, so it will have a really positive influence on the group if we can get him back playing again.
12 Trent West
This year West played 13 AFL games where he averaged 9.8 disposals, 21.4 hit-outs and two inside-50s per game. West also spent nine games playing for Geelong’s VFL side where he averaged 9.3 efficient disposals per game, along with an impressive average of 47.2 hit-outs.
Amos' review:
He probably got squeezed out of the team by Vardy and Simpson after they came in and played as well as they did. But his VFL form was outstanding. He dominated the competition – marked the ball, won stoppages and got his hands to the ball in ruck contests. He was one of those players who goes back and looks too good for the VFL competition. His finish to the year in the VFL was first-rate.
13 Tom Lonergan
The 29-year-old had a steady year in defence and didn’t miss a game all season, playing a total of 25 games including three finals. Again the reliable Cat, who spent approximately 91.1% of each game on the field, carried out his role without a hitch. Throughout the season he delivered an average of 8.3 disposals and 3.4 marks per game at 78.1% efficiency.
Amos' review:
He and Harry Taylor had another great year, combining well. Tom had a couple of quiet patches, but in the big games, against the best opponents, he played very well, as he has done now for a few years. I think his year was really solid. We hope it'll be much the same for him again next year.
