Nine years ago it was the Brisbane Lions who were the favourites to win against the Cats, when they ventured to Kardinia Park for round 13 in 2004.

However, nine years ago the scenario was slightly different for the two clubs, who will come head-to-head this weekend at the Gabba in Brisbane.

It was a rainy wintry day in June and the Cats were hungry for a win, having already lost five games compared to the Lions three. Up until this day the Cats hadn’t been able to win a game against the three-time premiers since 1995. They were the team to beat and many had described them as the best team of all time. Little did the Lions know that Geelong’s young team was about to embark on their most victorious journey.

This weekend in Brisbane, a number of Cats and Lions will have a clear memory of that game on June 19 in 2004, including Cats senior coach, Chris Scott, who was playing his 189th AFL game for the opposition.

The Cats list in 2004 also included a young Paul Chapman, Jimmy Bartel, Joel Corey, Josh Hunt, Steve Johnson, James Kelly and 19-year old Andrew Mackie.

Today, only three Brisbane Lion players remain on the list from nine years ago, including Jonathan Brown, Ashley McGrath and Simon Black, as well as the Lions senior coach, Michael Voss.

The Brisbane Lions started the game as predicted and led the way up until the siren sounded at halftime. The Cats were only down by three points and they knew they were still in for a chance. It didn’t take them long to take control of the game, kicking eight goals in the second term, which put them over the finishing line by 27 points.

That day it was former Geelong skipper Cameron Ling who took the lead with 25 possessions followed by Brenton Sanderson on 23.

And at the young age of 20, James Kelly and Steve Johnson, also produced a stunning performance against the Lions. Kelly made 21 touches and Johnson snapped two unforgettable goals.

Nine years on and the Cats have since developed into a very different team, one that is very similar to the Brisbane Lions 10 years ago. The Cats have also won three premierships and continue to demonstrate their strength with 10 wins this season to Brisbane's three.

This weekend the Cats will again make the journey to the Lions' home ground as favourites.

The last time Geelong lost to the Lions was in 2009 in round 15.
