Duncan finds a consistent beat
Mitch Duncan's hard work is paying off and his consistency on the field is starting to show
The Cats young gun is fast becoming a household name among the blue and white faithful.
Speaking to K-Rock Football on the weekend, Duncan opened up on the inconsistencies in his game which had plagued him for the first half of the season. By the halfway point of the year Duncan has hit the ground running.
“The last month and a half I’ve started to put together a few good games.
“I’m having the impact I want to have on the games.
“My numbers are probably as good as they have been but I wasn’t impacting the game as much as I wanted."
In a tough pre-season, Duncan admitted his focus was on winning contested ball and tackling. He is currently ranked sixth in the side for tackles (53), only behind the likes of Joel Selwood and Jimmy Bartel.
After playing across the half-back flank more than ever this year, Duncan has also been dragged forward by midfielders and forced to play as a defender. Despite it being a spot unfamiliar to him, he counts himself lucky to have the guidance he does.
“When you get in there with Harry Taylor and Corey Enright they pretty much tell you what to do so I’m pretty lucky in that regard.”
Being one of the leaders of the young Cats, Duncan will be an integral part of Geelong’s team of the future and already working on getting young group more involved.
“Jimmy Bartel isn’t going to be around forever so we want maybe a Cam Guthrie at a crucial stage to step up and win that vital contest which Guthers does quite a lot of times.
We are maturing as a younger group and that’s what we want to do, the things that Jimmy Bartel does at crucial times, that Joel Selwood does every game.”
Duncan is as strong believer in everyone in the team pulling their weight, passengers on the football field are not needed five weeks out from the finals series.
“When we play defensive, ruthless footy we attack really well and the game kind of takes hold of itself.”
