Geelong champion Jimmy Bartel says he remains committed to making a decision on his future when the Cats' season comes to an end.
“I haven’t [made the call],” Bartel told Fox Sports News’ AFL Tonight on Wednesday.
“I know it’s a bit cliche and it’s probably not the answer people are looking for, but I’m just generally enjoying football at the moment and I want to attack the finals series.
“Like I’ve said, I’ll weigh up the decision at the end of the season.”
In recent weeks there has been a lot of speculation about Bartel's future.
His premiership teammates Cameron Ling and Paul Chapman have come out in support of him, with Ling stating Bartel would be “filthy” with suggestions that he might have to play some games in the VFL if he goes on in 2017.
But the 32-year-old three-time premiership player insists he is not concerned about the way discussions on his future between him and the club are playing out.
“I’m pretty happy I’ve got some great ex-teammates that I’ve shared a lot of success with,” Bartel said.
“You’re a little bit chuffed when they throw their weight behind you. But he [Ling] is in the media and he called it as he saw it.
“Was he right? I’m not filthy at anything. I get to play football for a living, so how could I be filthy?”
Bartel is clear that if he does play on in 2017 he won't walk away if his form means he needs to spend time in the VFL.
“If I commit to the season, I’m committing to the season,” Bartel said. “I’m not going to throw my card on the table and quit. We’ll just cross that bit when it comes.
“I’ll see how I perform for the rest of the year and take an honest look at myself.
"Then I’ll chat with the list management and the coach and hear what they have to say and hear an honest appraisal of my season, then where I fit into next year.
“You also just have to look at your body. Fingers crossed nothing happens and that doesn’t become the deciding factor. There’s a lot of wait and see.”
