Geelong’s VFL side are sitting happily in fourth-place on the new-look VFL ladder for 2021.

As one of only four undefeated sides, it’s been a quality start to the year.

The recruitment of players like Jackson Thurlow and Darcy Lang has already proven to be a classy bit of list management. While Geelong's youth including Jye Chalcraft and Trent McMullan have already started cementing their spot in the side as well.

Head coach Shane O’Bree has a better idea than anyone about what this squad can achieve and what it needs to build on.

“It’s been a pretty good start and the mix of the group is going pretty well,” O'Bree said.

“I reckon we’ve been lucky enough to keep the same players playing the first few rounds to build the chemistry.”

“Obviously the AFL boys need to play in their preferred positions but we’ve tried to develop them in other areas too.”

With all the added talent throughout the group, both AFL and VFL-listed, there are still some unavoidable challenges the coaches need to manage.

“The hardest thing is with the AFL and VFL boys coming together is they don’t train a lot together,” he said.

“Game day you sort of unleash and ‘alright boys play together, you know the system’, so it’s good to keep the same group together.

APRIL 18: Shane O'Bree, Coach of the Cats addresses his players during the Round 01 VFL match between the Geelong Cats and the North Melbourne Kangaroos at GMHBA Stadium.

“For me, and the coaching group, and the players would agree, it’s just the consistency with everything we do.”

“I think we’ve had some really good patches and shown what we’re capable of.

“Then there’s times in games where, and on [last Thursday] was the case, our fundamentals, we sort of go away from them for a little bit.

“I reckon we’re doing all facets of the game fairly well, it’s just consistency for the whole game is what we’re after.”

The coming game this weekend will leave one of Geelong or Casey still undefeated, as both sides are yet to drop a game.

The Bankers will need to play a strong four quarters of footy against a side that’s doing just as well in the seniors.

Saturday’s Round 5 match will kick-off at Casey Fields Oval at 2pm.
