Geelong coach Chris Scott says whilst his assistants may be jostling for the no.35, he’s not entertaining the idea of a midfield without Patrick Dangerfield

When asked, via this week’s episode of #TweetTheCoach, about Dangerfield’s prospects as a running defender off half back, Scott was diplomatic with his answer.

“You sound like the defensive coach Matthew Scarlett,” Scott joked.

“And If I could give you a little bit of an insight into what Blake Caracella’s thinking as forwards coach, he wants him [Dangerfield] deep forward for the whole game.”

The idea of playing Dangerfield predominantly forward is a tantalising option for the Cats’ coaching staff, but Scott admits his star midfielder is unlikely to be deployed at the other end of the ground any time soon.

“Half back? I’ve got to be honest with you, it’s probably a little down the list of priorities for us. We like him in the middle, in the action,” he said.

“He obviously does some damage in the forward half, but I think the most you’ll see him in the back half is when he’s worked back as a midfielder.”
