GEELONG put up a spirited performance but were no match for a Gold Coast outfit who proved too strong at Metricon Stadium on Friday night.
The Cats started well kicking the opening two goals of the game, but from that moment onwards the Suns dominated proceedings recording a 7.7 (49) to 6.2 (38) victory.
In their second interstate trip of the year, the Cats were the side who settled best early with a well-placed kick from Chloe Scheer onto the chest of Kate Darby resulting in the opening goal of the game.
Scheer was involved again for the Cats shortly afterwards, this time finding Zali Friswell in space and the 18-year-old went back to kick her first AFLW goal.
Nina Morrison was influential in the lead up with the intercept to create the scoring opportunity with the silky skilled Cat one of Geelong’s better performers on the night with 15 disposals and a game-high 11 tackles.
A late 50-metre penalty proved costly with Lauren Bella kicking to the Suns first major with only 30 seconds remaining in the first term as Geelong took a three-point lead into quarter time.
Tara Bohanna made it successive goals for the Suns with a major inside the opening minutes of the second term as the Suns centre clearance dominance started to have an impact.
The home side dominated this aspect all evening with a 36-20 advantage come the final siren and +21 advantage in contested possessions.
Speedy Sun Tori Groves-Little added a third soon after to extend the Suns lead to nine-points.
The Cats maintained that deficit until the half time siren with Maddy McMahon standing up late in the second quarter with a couple of crucial moments.
The third term started much like the one prior as the Suns continued to dominate field possession as the Cats struggled to adapt to the consistent pressure applied.
A goal to Jamie Stanton extended the Suns lead to 17 points and Geelong were in much need of a spark.
It was Phoebe McWilliams who provided it with a soccer finish after Georgie Prespakis (17 disposals, 6 clearances) kicked the ball into space to create the chance. It was Geelong’s first score since the eight-minute mark of the opening term.
Gold Coast got the quick reply with Groves-Little kicking her second-goal as the Suns extended its lead to 24 points at three-quarter-time.
McWilliams added a second in the final term and Scheer contributed a couple as the Cats produced their best quarter of the game.
However, Geelong left its run a bit too late with the Suns holding on for an 11-point victory.
Geelong will now return to Victoria and prepare for its Round 7 clash with the Western Bulldogs at Whitten Oval on Friday night.
