Geelong champions Cameron Ling and Cameron Mooney headline a star-studded line up of AFL greats and media personalities for the TradingPost.com EJ Whitten Legends Game this Friday night at Etihad Stadium.
Supporting the EJ Whitten Foundation and the AFL’s charity partners, the highly popular event has raised more than $9.5 million dollars since 1995 and, in the spirit of the great EJ Whitten, will see Victoria battle it out with the All Stars in a state versus state, mate versus mate contest.
A winner of three premierships with the Cats – including one as captain – Cameron Ling will don ‘the Big V’ alongside Victorian captain Jonathon Brown and five-time premiership player Dermott Brereton to name a few.
Ling himself played 246 games for the Cats, predominantly through the midfield. The now 35-year-old was responsible for stopping the biggest names in the game in an era of sublime ball-winners and built a reputation as one of the competition’s toughest opponents.
A teammate in two of those Geelong premierships, Cameron Mooney will face off against Ling as a member of the All Stars.
Affectionately known as ‘the Big Hairy Cat’, Mooney was an eccentric goal kicking machine in his heyday; booting 297 goals in a 221-game career with Geelong and North Melbourne. Mooney was also named an All-Australian in 2007 and was the Cats’ leading goal kicker in 2007 and 2009.
The full list of players can be found here.
The EJ Whitten Foundation honours the legacy of EJ Whitten, who died after a long and public battle with prostate cancer.
A man dies of prostate cancer every three point two hours in Australia. Twenty thousand men are diagnosed with the disease each year. Early detection, through regular health checks, saves lives.
