Ahead of this week’s clash against the Suns, Chris Scott was asked how the Cats would carry out a plan to combat last year’s rising star, Jaeger O'Meara, while keeping a firm paw on former teammate Gary Ablett.

This time around, Scott says it won’t be a case of shutting down certain individuals but the entire midfield outfit, as that’s where the Suns dish it out the best.

“It’s a good question, you’ve probably left out Dion Prestia, David Swallow, and a few others as well,” Scott told Cats TV.

“It’s always the challenge when you play against good teams and Gold Coast unquestionably have a good midfield, an A-Grade midfield now.

“So work needs to go into Ablett but work also needs to go into the others as well.

“The way most teams seem to do it is have one or two specific match ups and then back the team’s defence from there.

“I suspect it will end up being our midfield versus theirs rather than individual match ups.”

Despite being faced with another interstate test, Scott says the Cats look forward to this week's contest against the Suns's captain, not only because Ablett's an ex-teammate but because of his status within the competition.

“I think the boys really thrive on playing the best and there’s a little added spice when you’re playing the best but who is also someone who has been really important for our football club,” Scott said.

Scott highly respects Ablett, however, he’s confident his team has the talent to extinguish the league’s biggest player.

“I think they’ll be motivated to play the best against Gary and show him that they might have a little bit of an edge but it’s going to be a big task because if he’s not the best, he’s one of the best of all time.”
