2025 AFL Season - Round One

Geelong Cats v Fremantle

GMHBA Stadium

Saturday 15 March, 1.20pm (AEDT)

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Geelong: Zach Guthrie

On the back of an outstanding season that saw him finish runner-up in the Carji Greeves Medal, Zach Guthrie will once again be an integral part of Geelong's defensive unit in 2025.

Guthrie set career-high numbers in numerous categories last season including disposals (18.24 per game), marks (6.00), rebound 50s (5.16) and intercept possessions (7.00).

Last time the Cats faced Fremantle, Guthrie was outstanding finishing with 20 disposals, 10 marks and a game high 11 intercept possessions.

Fremantle: Luke Ryan

An important role in any team is the distributor off half back, and no player does it better than Fremantle's Luke Ryan.

The defender earned his second All-Australian blazer last year, averaging over 24 disposals, eight marks and seven rebound 50's per game.

Geelong saw his impact up close in round 22, with Ryan accumulating 36 disposals (34 kicks), 15 marks and 951 metres gained in the clash.

RECENT HISTORY

The most recent clash between these two teams came in round 22 last year, with Geelong securing a nail-biting 11 point win over the Dockers at Optus Stadium.

It broke a run of three consecutive losses against Fremantle for Geelong, with two of those losses coming at GMHBA Stadium (2022 & 2023).

Over the past 10 matches it has been an intriguing rivalry, with Geelong narrowly holding the upper hand winning six times to the Dockers four.

This has also been a match-up that has produced a number of thrilling finishes, with eight clashes decided by 11 points or less dating back to 2010.
