Cats to take sting from Scorpions
Geelong has named a near full-strength side for its first VFL final
AFL young guns Taylor Hunt, George Horlin-Smith and Josh Walker have all been included in the extended squad after spending last week on the sidelines.
The have been joined in the line up by VFL premiership skipper Troy Selwood, who has been named to return from a shoulder injury sustained against Port Melbourne two weeks ago.
Experienced VFL listed quartet Andrew Banjanin, Jaxson Barham, Jackson Hollmer and Robert Condy have also been included in the 27 man squad.
‘Modewarre turned Newtown’ wingman Dane McFarlane has been selected as the 23rd player for the Cats after returning to the side last weekend against Bendigo Gold. His blistering speed will be considered crucial against the fleet footed Scorpions side.
The list of out going players is headlined by AFL premiership ruckman Trent West who has been rewarded for his recent good form at second tier level by being elevated to the AFL side in place of the ‘managed’ Nathan Vardy.
2012 VFL premiership defender Jed Bews will miss the clash with general soreness, while VFL listed wingman Daniel Gibbs will return to play with Queenscliff this weekend.
The Casey Scorpions are one of only two sides to defeat the VFL Cats this year and the last side to beat them at Simonds Stadium. Both these facts are sure to give the Rohan Welsh coached side a great deal of confidence when they run out in front of a hostile crowd.
The Scorpions have named a formidable line up that includes 2010 All Australian ruckman Mark Jamar and fellow AFL regulars Rohan Bail, Cameron Pedersen and James Sellar.
The extended 31 man squad includes a number of familiar faces such as 2012 Geelong VFL premiership defender Tom Gillies and former VFL listed player Tom Couch.
The reward for the victorious team will be a invaluable weekend off in the race for 2013 VFL premiership, while the loser will be off to North Port Oval next weekend to play either the Werribee Tigers or Essendon.
The match kicks off at 7.00pm and will be broadcast on both VFL Radio and Casey Radio (97.7FM)
