Zach Tuohy has sounded a warning to the rest of the competition that Geelong has plenty of improvement left despite winning the last eight games and sitting on top of the ladder.
Tuohy was critical in Geelong’s five goal win over Carlton on Saturday, one of five players that had six or more intercept possessions alongside Jack Henry (8), Sam De Koning (7), Mark O’Connor (7) and Zach Guthrie (7).
Tuohy had eight of his own to go along 24 touches and five marks as part of a stifling Geelong defence that squeezed Carlton’s forwards into submission, and all without defensive general Tom Stewart.
But according to Tuohy, there’s still work to do in the lead up to the finals.
“We feel like we're playing quite well but a long way off our best which is exciting”, he told K rock Football in the rooms after the game.
“You can always find areas that you need to improve on, so it's just continually, incrementally improving the things that we're good at which is primarily the contest.
“We've got a lot of big bodies and I think that showed tonight.”
Tuohy, in his 12th season of football was judged among the best players on the ground on Saturday night according to the coaches and continues to be a key part of Geelong’s September calculations, posting above average ratings in disposals (21.7) and metres gained (399.6) per contest so far this season.
Geelong take on Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval at 4.35pm on Saturday.
