Geelong coach Chris Scott says his players have the freedom to use their non-preferred side by foot but only if they’re sure of its effectiveness.
Speaking on this week’s episode of #TweetTheCoach, Scott said some coaches actually implore their players not to use the opposite side of their body when disposing of the ball.
“I think it’s logical that most players would have a preferred side,” he said.
“The older generation tend to have a bugbear about guys not being able to use their non-preferred side as well [as their preferred].”
“Some coaches do coach players not to use it – to get onto their preferred side.”
Scott, however, gives his team a licence to use their non-dominant side if they know they can pull it off.
“We’d like to think we’ve got pretty good balance; we really encourage our guys to practice it because there are times where you just have to use it,” he said.
“But unless you’ve practiced it or an alternate method, really you shouldn’t be pulling that out game day.”
