While Geelong captain Joel Selwood will officially break Hawthorn great Michael Tuck’s record for the most finals games played at next Saturday’s Grand Final, teammate Tom Hawkins has been quietly writing his own name in the record books.
A four goal haul on Friday night saw him move past league legends Peter Hudson and Wayne Carey, both tied on 727, on the all time career goal kicking leaderboard, while also kicking his 50th career finals goal.
Hawkins, speaking in the rooms post match, deflected credit to the Geelong Cats oganisation.
“It's a lovely stat, but the fact of the matter is that each year as part of the Geelong footy club I get the opportunity to play finals,” he said.
“This is my 16th season and in one season I haven't been able to play in a finals series so the organisation keeps giving us an opportunity.
“There's a lot of hard work that goes into getting to a finals series and then ultimately getting to where we are now but I've been so fortunate to be part of such a successful group for so long.”
The Cats spearhead also drew level with Gordon Coventry and former teammate Harry Taylor for most finals played.
“I don't know how many finals games I've played in, it's not 39, but it's not too far behind Joel, he said.
“I didn't get to play as much early in my career as he did, but again, if you can contribute, it's a great time of the year to contribute.”
Hawkins certainly played a big role in helping earn the Cats an invite to next Saturday’s Grand Final, not only kicking four goals, but notching up 13 score involvements from 14 possessions to go along with five marks and four tackles.
