Geelong will turn its attention to the Magpies at the MCG in a little over two weeks after wrapping up their pre-season against the Lions at Brighton Homes Arena on Thursday night.

Will Ashcroft and Josh Dunkley were the stars for Brisbane as the home team finished the night with a 13.13 (91) to 6.9. (45) win over the Cats on a warm and dewy Queensland night.

While the Cats had the ball camped inside Brisbane's 50 for much of the opening quarter (20-9), without Tom Hawkins (foot) and Jeremy Cameron (rested), they battled to find avenues to goal, and the Lions pounced on the counter-attack.

Hawthorn recruit Jack Gunston (1.3) got out the back for the game's opening goal after a Zac Bailey transition, while Hipwood, Bailey and Joe Daniher added further goals to open a nice lead.

Like Brisbane, Geelong was missing a handful of regular best 22 players, including late scratching Mark Blicavs (gastro) and although battling hard, never really extended the Lions.

The Cats lost Jake Kolodjashnij to a head knock during the third quarter after he was on the end of some friendly fire.

Gryan Miers was a standout for the Geelong, looking confident and assured with the footy across the middle of the ground, finishing at the top of the stats sheet with 23 disposals and seven marks, while Tyson Stengle was in mid-season form, collecting 20 disposals, six marks, two goals, including a signature check-side after dancing by two Lions hard up on the boundary.

At the other end of the ground, Tom Stewart was arguably the Cats' best while Esava Ratugolea continues to emerge as a key back, finishing the game with an equal team-high eight intercept possessions, alongside Stewart.

Geelong faces Collingwood on Friday, March 17 at the MCG to open the 2023 AFL season.
