Geelong VFLW player Sachi DeGiacomi impressed as she played forward and kicked four goals during the Cat’s win against the Darebin Falcons on Saturday.

The midfielder/forward was quick to shift the focus to her teammates, though, saying that the overarching secret to the Cats’ success was their cohesive team structure and diligence throughout the match.

“It was really good having (Chloe) Scheer in there on the weekend because she was just good experience in the midfield, getting us repeat inside 50s. As a result, I was lucky enough to come in on the end of four goals but that was because of my other four team members at the time that helped the forward line work,” DeGiacomi said.

“Something that we’ve been working on is how the five of us gel in the forward line and how we can get our structure so we can get each other into one-on-ones, because we back ourselves to win those one-on-ones.

“I think that when we play our brand of footy, we use the outside and get it closer to the forward line (and) we look really dangerous. I think we did good executing that on the weekend and getting our fundamentals right.”

DeGiacomi highlighted that one of the key factors which contributed to the Cats’ impressive performance last week was working on the fundamentals practised in training.

“This week we really executed the basics and worked as a team and played how we want to play. The deep entry into the forward line allowed us to get those good scores on the board,” she said.

This year, DeGiacomi joined Geelong’s VFLW player leadership group, mentoring and working together with the team to create the best outcomes.

“It’s been great! It’s something that I’m passionate about and really honoured to do - so I think as a leadership group we’re just trying to focus on a team-first approach and just really getting around the girls and supporting them,” she said.

DeGiacomi looks forward to this week’s upcoming challenge against the Southern Saints in Sandringham.

“I think it will be a tight contest, but we back ourselves and we back the brand of footy that we play. So I think if we bring that from last week through to this week and get the fundamentals right while playing the footy that we want to play, hopefully we can come out on top,” she said.

Geelong takes on Southern Saints this Sunday, with first bounce at 9.45am at Trevor Barker Beach Oval.
