In slippery conditions Geelong went down fighting after the Casey Demons flew out of the blocks early at Deakin University on Saturday.

After Casey piled on 3.6 in the opening term, Geelong chased hard for the rest of the game4 but ultimately fell short to the Demons who claimed a 21-point lead.

In the second quarter, Analea Mckee kicked an exciting first goal for Geelong and it was in final quarter that Sachi Degiacomi got another score on the board just before the final siren sounded.

VFLW senior coach, Elise Coventry said that Geelong performed well, despite the Demons setting them back in the first quarter.

“It was a real struggle early. Casey came out harder and stronger at the footy, had a lot more support than what we did and then on the scoreboard they really hurt us so to go into the quarter time break three-six to zip. It was always going to be a real battle from then on,” she said.

“The girls to their credit stemmed the flow of their scoring and started to give themselves some opportunities to score themselves, but just didn’t have enough to keep up."

Coventry said that Gabbi Featherstone, Sarah Perrott, Analea McKee and Molly Walton were all strong contributors across today’s game.

“Gabbi Featherstone who was playing as an inside-mod but then we threw her into the ruck as well had a bit of an influence to turn the game around and at least level the playing field a bit for us and get us a bit more forward entry,” she said.

“Behind the ball Sarah Perrott was really stable in defence. Analea presented really well up forward. Molly Walton who’s a lead player played a few games for us and looked really comfortable today in defence and did everything we asked of her and just won some one-on-ones which was pleasing to see.

Next week, Geelong has a bye before settling back into round 12 to take on Box Hill at Deakin University.

“This week we’re heading into a bye and giving the girls a bit of a break from each other and the club so they’ll go back to their local clubs and train there and then after that we’ll just look for some consistency, so to play a game of four quarters in the past we’ve struggled to start out in terms of capitalizing on our inside fifties, but this week we struggled to start and stop their inside fifties so it’s just consistency for us,” Coventry said.
