After seeing the slide rule in action over the weekend, Lonergan firmly believes the AFL have delivered an important rule.

Having had players like Gary Rohan and Scott Pendlebury endure horrific injuries from players sliding into their knees, Lonergan is pleased to see that the AFL has addressed the issue with a rule that will prevent similar injuries, and protect the safety of players.

“I’m definitely saying mandatory… I think it’s a great rule the AFL have brought in. Anything to protect player’s safety I think is a good rule.’’

Gullan, however, is concerned about how accurately umpires will interpret the rule and is worried about it being abused.

“There might be incidental contact so I can see some players faking it, so that’s the problem,” Gullan said.
