The 2017 season started well for the Cats, winning their opening five games to sit equal top of the ladder before hitting a minor slump with three straight losses.
Defeated by Collingwood, Gold Coast and Essendon in consecutive weeks, Geelong needed a response when the Bulldogs came down the highway in Round 9.
Patrick Dangerfield signalled his intentions from the start, launching home a set shot from outside 50 and slotting a miracle left footer on the run in the first quarter, but the Cats trailed at the first break by nine points.
The game was turned on its head in the second quarter with a five-goal burst from Geelong, holding the Bulldogs scoreless to build a 26-point lead at the main break.
But the game had another twist, with the Dogs kicking six unanswered goals in the third term to storm back into the contest and take a nine-point lead into the final change.
Geelong refused to lie down, throwing everything they had at the Bulldogs and taking a four point lead at the 20 minute mark of the final quarter.
From there the Cats took over - Dan Menzel extended the Cats lead, Harry Taylor booted his fifth goal and Dangerfield put the cherry on top with his fourth, closing out an important 23 point win.
The Cats laid 134 team tackles which is the fourth highest total in AFL history, led by 18 tackles from Mitch Duncan and 17 from Scott Selwood.
Patrick Dangerfield put together one of the most incredible individual performances, amassing 36 disposals, 10 clearances, 12 tackles and booting four goals to take the three Brownlow votes.
Mitch Duncan collected 31 disposals to take two Brownlow votes, while a five goal haul from Harry Taylor snared him the single vote.
