Geelong and St Kilda have a long and storied history, dating all the way back to the inaugural VFL season in 1897.
At the time the competition had eight teams, with the two sides squaring off for the first time in round seven of the 1897 season.
From there both the Cats and Saints have evolved as the competition has developed, with the rivalry between the two sides continuing to grow along the way.
To this day Geelong and St Kilda have played each other 222 times, with the Cats winning 135 of those contests to hold a 61% win rate.
As a home team Geelong holds a very strong record, winning 86 of 112 games to hold a 77% win rate when they host the Saints.
Recent history between the two sides has been intriguing, splitting the last four games evenly with two wins each after the Cats recorded a six-game win streak between 2017 and 2021.
Geelong and St Kilda’s rivalry hit memorable new heights between 2008 and 2011, when the teams squared off in a number of thrilling clashes.
The stretch started with the 2008 qualifying final when the Cats triumphed over the Saints, winning the game by 58 points to advance to a Preliminary Final.
2009 provided a pair of iconic clashes, the first coming in round 14 when both sides entered the game undefeated and played one of the greatest home and away games in recent history.
St Kilda prevailed in the thrilling contest claiming a six-point win, with the match setting a crowd record at Marvel Stadium which is still standing to this day.
The Cats had the last laugh in 2009 when they defeated the Saints in the Grand Final, claiming their second premiership in three years.
St Kilda then got their own back winning two tight clashes in 2010 including a qualifying final, before Geelong capped off the stretch with a one-point win in the opening round of the 2011 season.
Across these five games, four were decided by 12 points or less in a brilliant patch of football between two powerhouse clubs.
