The Cats head to Arden Street on Sunday for their Week 2 clash, looking to secure their first win of the 2024 season and their first ever AFLW win against the Kangaroos.

Geelong performed strongly in Week 1 but fell agonisingly short of securing a win, going down to Melbourne by two points in tough conditions at GMHBA Stadium.

The North Melbourne Tasmanian Kangaroos were impressive in their opening game of the season, taking down Brisbane by 44 points in a Grand Final rematch.

The Kangaroos piled on six goals to none in a dominant third quarter, led by midfielders Ash Riddell and Jasmine Garner who collected 58 disposals between them.

Nullifying the Kangaroos star midfielders

Kangaroos on-ballers Ash Riddell and Jasmine Garner finished the 2023 AFLW season as the top two disposal winners across the competition, helping the team reach a Grand Final.

The pair showed no signs of slowing down in Week 1, Riddell collecting 31 disposals and kicking a goal while Garner picked up 27 possessions and six clearances.

It sets up a mouth-watering clash on Sunday against Geelong’s own midfield stars, including the likes of Georgie Prespakis and Amy McDonald.

Restricting North’s Efficiency Inside 50

The Kangaroos were actually beaten by Brisbane in plenty of statistics despite their big win in Week 1, but their conversion rate in front of goal was a big factor in the victory.

North were able to kick 12 goals from 35 inside-50 entries last Sunday, a conversion rate of 34%. By comparison Geelong went at only 17% in their Week 1 clash against Melbourne, kicking six goals from the same amount of inside-50 entries.

Geelong will need to find a way to disrupt the Kangaroos efficiency on Sunday.

Winning the clearance battle

In the last clash between the two teams, the Kangaroos were dominant around stoppages winning the clearance battle 35 to 18.

North Melbourne were particularly impressive around stoppage clearances (33-14), with Jasmine Garner (12 clearances) and Mia King (eight clearances) leading the way.

The Cats were beaten by Melbourne at stoppage clearances in Week 1 (17-25), with this area set to be crucial against the Kangaroos again on Sunday.
