Anna-Rose Kennedy at Geelong Cats Training

Only three games into her AFLW career, Anna-Rose Kennedy is looking increasingly comfortable in the Cats backline following a strong performance against the Kangaroos on Sunday.

The Irish recruit was one of the best stories in the 2023 season, making her debut in the Preliminary Final against Brisbane in Kennedy’s first year with Geelong.

Earning her spot in the team right from Week 1 in 2024, Kennedy has fitted seamlessly into the Cats defensive unit making a number of terrific plays across the first two games.

Kennedy joined Cats Media following the clash with the Kangaroos, touching on her development focus in her second AFLW season.

“I am just getting used to the game still, I am just learning each game trying to get better and better as it goes on,” Kennedy said.

“There are a lot of one-on-one contests down in defence, we help each other out as a system. Each of us then play a part to get the ball in and out of the defensive 50.

“It is a really great group, we all get on really well and work well as a unit.

“If we keep trusting the system and training hard, hopefully we will do well this year.”

The Cats recorded their first points of the season on Sunday, fighting out an enthralling draw against the Kangaroos at Arden Street Oval.

Clawing their way back from an 18-point half time deficit, Geelong kicked four of the last five goals to level the scores late, securing a draw against one of the competition’s strongest teams.

Kennedy said that while it was disappointing not to come away with the win, the team was happy with their performance which will help them improve in weeks to come.

“It was a tough one, we were happy enough with our effort after coming back from a three-goal deficit,” Kennedy said.

“We were happy enough to come back and get two points. I am just getting used to things myself, but I think everyone was reasonably happy with the performance.

“Another big challenge next weekend, it is all about getting ourselves ready and set to go again.

“We will recover well and be ready to go again next week.”
